Leaf litter is the top layer of every healthy bioactive enclosure. It feeds your clean-up crew, holds humidity at ground level, gives animals places to hide and makes the build look like a real forest floor.
Choosing leaf litter
- Long-lasting: magnolia, red oak and eastern oak break down slowly, so you top up less often.
- Tannin-rich: Indian almond (catappa), mangrove and kumbuk leaves are also popular in shrimp, betta and blackwater tanks.
- Small enclosures: mini oak leaves suit dart frog vivariums, nano terrariums and isopod cultures.
How much leaf litter do I need?
Aim for a loose layer 2–5 cm deep across most of the floor, and add a handful every few weeks as your isopods eat through it. Mixing two or three leaf types gives your clean-up crew variety and looks more natural.
